The Results Are Closer Than You Think (Even If Your Big Goal Feels Years Away)

August 18, 20263 min read

So often as leaders and business owners, we know where we want to go. We can see the big vision. Sell the company. Hire a real team. Take our team on vacation. Own our own property someday.

But that vision can feel so far away that it seems like it will never happen, or that it will take years to get there. So in the meantime, we keep doing what we did yesterday, and the day before that, over and over. It looks like progress. It is really just spinning our wheels, letting what we did yesterday dictate what we do today.

Why Business Owners Feel Stuck Chasing Long-Term Goals

This is one of the most common patterns I see in women leaders and entrepreneurs. You have a clear picture of where you want to be. What you do not have is a clear picture of how today connects to it. So the vision stays a vision, and the daily to-do list stays the daily to-do list, and the two never quite touch.

The shift that changes this is simple to say and harder to practice: start letting your future determine the actions you take today, instead of letting yesterday determine what you do today.

Breaking Big Goals Into Micro Steps

The way you make that shift real is by breaking your big goal down into steps so small, so laughably tiny, you cannot help but move forward.

Here is what that looks like in practice.

A woman I worked with set a goal. A year from now, at the end of our work together, she wanted to be ready to make her first hire. In her one on one session, we sat down and mapped out what it would actually take to get her there.

Instead of her focusing on the hire itself, on when it would happen or who it would be or where they would come from, we asked a different question. What do we need to do to get ready?

The first step was writing a job description. From there, we figured out what the pay would be. Then we identified where to post it. Then we planned how to announce the opening. Once the announcement went out, she needed to conduct interviews. And before any of that mattered, she needed training documents ready so a new hire could actually onboard.

We looked at the entire hiring process as a series of small, manageable steps. Instead of focusing on hiring someday in the future, she focused on the next micro step, and then the next one, preparing her for the moment she was actually ready.

Strategic Planning for Business Owners: The Real Result

She hired within three months. That new hire was contributing to her bottom line almost immediately.

Now, twelve months later, she has a team of four and just celebrated her biggest month in business yet.

She would not be a team of four celebrating her biggest month if she had waited an entire year to make that first hire.

How to Start Taking Action Today Instead of Waiting

The point is this: your results are probably closer than you think when you start taking actions that are in alignment with where you want to go, instead of where you have been.

This is strategic decision making in practice. You start making choices in your business based on the results you actually want, not the routine you have always followed. It changes how you approach every decision in front of you. It changes what you believe is possible for you. And that shift inside yourself is what makes you the CEO you always wanted to be.

If you have a goal that feels years away, try this. Pick one piece of it. Break it into the smallest possible next step. Then take that step this week.

The distance between where you are and where you want to be is usually shorter than it looks.
